As the ’90s wore on, the BBC decided TOTP needed a revamp and brought in Chris Cowey, whose credits included The Tube and the short-lived but influential The White Room (1995-96) as executive producer (1997-2003).

“I realise that at the time I took it over TOTP had its issues. I was aware albums were outselling singled by about six to one. Quite often my challenge was to make a good, enganging TOTP despite the chart rather than because of it,” he says.”
